Cyclists are still reluctant to use Rustenburg Road after they had previously been victimised on the route.

About a month ago, Northcliff Melville Times reported on the increase in the number of cyclist hijackings and attacks by criminals.

Solo cyclists and various cycling groups from around the city would use this route.

Roads where cyclists had been frequently attacked, are Barry Hertzog Avenue, particularly under the Carlow Road bridge, and where the avenue connects with Rustenburg Road.

Ken McArthur, a cyclist who had used the route often with his cycle group, said although they had not heard of any attacks on that route in past weeks, his cycle group had not risked it. “Maybe hearing that there had been no attacks is a good thing, this might show that steps had been taken to change the surroundings.”

One group, The Illovo Cycle Group did manage to galvanise and start the change that Rustenburg Road needed.

Along with Ward 87 councillor Bridget Steer the group got together and cut down the alien plants that had densely populated the embankment.

One of the group’s members, Laurent Sholtz said even though they cleaned up the area they never got the chance to benefit from their team effort.

“The risk of it happening again does complicate our riding, now we have to ride on streets with traffic rather than be attacked.”

Steer did vouch for the route adding that some cyclists still ride it.

“We have also fixed the streetlights that had not been working for quite some time.”

She added that she now looks towards clearing out alien plants found under Carlow Road bridge.
