Phiri was recently admitted to a hospital in Nelspruit. The Sowetan quoted him saying: “Let me suffer pain, on my own with dignity.”

His band mate Richard Mitchell said that Phiri had exhausted all his private funds including medical aid funds earlier this week. A crowd-funding initiative was started to raise R50 000 for his medical expenses but was stopped at the family’s request.

Phiri was the founding member of the Cannibals in the 1970s and Stimela. They produced gold and platinum-selling albums like Fire, Passion and Ecstacy (1991), Look, Listen and Decide (1992) as well as the controversial People Don’t Talk So Let’s Talk.

He was one of the artists featured in Paul Simon’s Grammy winning Graceland with Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

Tributes have been pouring in on social media after news of his passing. He was 70 years-old.
