Abbotts helps save lives

Abbotts College Northcliff prides itself not only in academics, but in making a difference in the community.

On 28 July, the school embarked on a blood drive to support the South African National Blood Service to help save lives.

According to the service’s website, less than one per cent of South Africans are active blood donors. This means that Abbotts Northcliff students are part of a very small percentage in the country doing their part to keep the blood donation level up.

Abbotts’ donation clinic was set up in their hall and was run by the service’s professional staff.

“Learners started to trickle into the hall a bit pale and nervous but determined to do their bit to save lives,” said Lourien Pitman, Abbotts College Northcliff Grade 10 head.

It was not only Abbotts students who took the plunge, but staff members did their part to save lives as well. After a busy day at the school and many brave faces facing the needle, 44 units of blood were collected.

“We were very pleased and proud of all the Abbotts College learners and staff who donated.”
