Kano Institute of Judo can proudly boast that 11 of their judoka received medals at the Commonwealth Judo Championships.
The event was hosted recently at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) at the Summerstrand Campus. This was the first time that Judo South Africa hosted the event.
Kano coach, Josie Knoester said that among the participants were England, Guernsey, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Botswana, Mozambique, Mauritius, Nigeria, Zimbabwe and South Africa.
Knoester said that the institute, which has found its new premises at the Northcliff Country Club, managed to boldly acquire three gold medals, five silver medals and three bronze medals.
“Seven of the judoka who took part in the championships have taken part in international competitions over the years and have received their national colours,” said Knoester. For four of those who participated, it was their first time competing internationally.
Sensei Oscar Knoester, owner of the institute, said that he was very proud of his judoka. “They have all put in many long hours of training to achieve their medals.”
