Students say enough is enough!

A group of students picketed outside Brixton Police Station to express their frustration with the organisation.

One of the students, Tholakele Nyathi, said that the group was there to tell the Brixton SAPS that they were fed up with the lack of service delivery.

“We feel as though the police are not looking after us,” she said.

She added that the picket is aimed at raising awareness for their plight. “Through this picket we hope that the police see that we want better service from them,” said Nyathi.

The UJ student explained that at times students would open up cases and they would head back to the police station to see if their case was followed up on, but as she explained, found that they were not.

“Also the police do not patrol the area as they should, and when we asked why, they complain that there is a lack of resources,” said Nyathi.

Nyathi said that a police commander from the station did come out and asked to speak to the picket leader. “We explained to him that he should speak to all of us as we are all leaders of this picket,” she said.

She concluded they hope they gain positive support from the community and that they hope they will not be victimised by the police.

At the time of publishing, Brixton SAPS was not available for comment.
