Those who previously attended the college were invited to enjoy a day of renewing old acquaintances, play a rugby match and participate in the 6-a-side soccer, hockey and netball matches.

The cheerleading team was also present on the day and in high spirits to get their teams and school excited for the day.

Atholl Murray, the high school’s headmaster, explained that the idea behind the day was not only to bring community back to the school but also to break the stereotype that high school is a scary place.

“It was great to see the school spirit so high and the fantastic addition of past pupils to make the day even more special,” said Murray.

He said that sports very often is an activity that brings people together, so hosting this derby was an easy decision to make.

“When you look at our country’s history, for instance, the 1995 Rugby World Cup or the 2010 Soccer World cup, we were all just brought together as a country through these sporting events.”

The day came to a joyful end as the award-winning songwriter, Daniel Baron, who attended the college in the past, serenaded the audience.
