Protest builds up on Hendrik Potgieter Road

A crowd is gathering along Hendrik Potgieter Road in Roodepoort for another anti-Zuma protest.

Residents are marching all over Joburg, after a call was made for a national shutdown through many protests against President Jacob Zuma after his cabinet reshuffle last week.

Noel Maart holds up his placard.

Protesters are raising their placards and chanting President Jacob Zuma must go.

Alan Webb, from MYNeighbour made it clear that the march was not political. “We are not siding with any political party. This is not a political gathering. These are individuals from parts of Honeydew, Little Falls and Wilgeheuwel surrounds against our president,” he said.

It is still unclear whether traffic flow will be affected on this road as it was on Beyers Naudé Drive when Joburgers protested peacefully on both sides of the road, causing traffic congestion this morning.

Reshuffling of cabinet

Zuma’s reshuffling of cabinet last week included the firing of Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan and Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas.

The president was widely criticised for his decision to reshuffle cabinet with some members of the ANC and opposition political parties calling for his resignation. South Africa was also downgraded to junk status after the announcement.
