UPDATE: Community mourns Alberts Farm runner

The Alberts Farm running community on social media is mourning the death of Deon Ollewagen, an athlete in his 50s, who collapsed and died towards the end of the parkrun on 13 May.

The Northcliff Melville Times had initially reported that Ollewagen was 65-years-old according to information received at the weekend.

A close friend, Eloise Lewis-Enright confirmed in a Facebook post that Ollewagen suffered a heart attack 200 meters from the end of the Alberts Farm parkrun on Saturday.

Those who were close to Ollewagen shared their messages of support to the family.

Lyn van Blerk said,

“This is very sad indeed and Deon will be sorely missed, [and] it has been a shock to us.”

Wayne Kaminsky said, “It really was shocking news, he had such a good energy.”

Carole Tyler Lamont, expressed her heartfelt condolences to the family, saying she was sorry to hear the saddening news.

The Albert’s Farm event coordinator Mike Tippett also confirmed the incident, but declined to disclose anything before speaking with Ollewagen’s family.

“At this stage I can’t say anything on this matter, [however] I will be meeting with the family soon,” he said.
