Amanda Lloyd made her club extremely proud when she represented the Linden Bowling Club at the 2017 President’s Cup.

The prestigious tournament took place at the Italian Club on 12 to 13 August.

Lloyd has come a long way in the five years she has been competing. She said her partner, who is also a bowler, inspired her to take an interest in the sport. She soon realised she enjoyed it and was told she had the potential to play the sport competitively. She has never looked back since then.

“This particular tournament is by invitation only by the selectors of the Johannesburg Bowling Association (JBA), which takes place once a year,” said Lloyd. “This was my third year I’ve been invited and last year I managed to be a runner-up by narrowly missing the win by just two shots. This year I was lucky enough to win it with lots of practice as well as a lot of help and advice from my coach Allan Gordon.”

Coming from a sports background, her family and friends are proud of her accomplishments. She has competed in a number of competitions over the past few years such as the Gauteng Open and national and provincial bowling tournaments.

“Some of my highlights are being in the JBA Fours in 2016 when our team won gold and I was also selected for the provincial B side. In 2017, I received my provincial colours when my team and I were fortunate to win gold. Winning the Presidents Cup this year would have to be my proudest moment as a bowler, as this was my personal goal for the past three years.”

The journey continues for this avid bowler when she will compete in the JBA Master’s singles tournament at the Wanderers Bowling Club on 19 to 20 August.

She encourages young people to try out this challenging, highly competitive sport and considers it lots of fun for both a social and competitive person.
