Fairland police share theft hotspots

Fairland Police Station commander, Lieutenant Colonel Clive de Freitas, says residents can always call the police to patrol their street should they have a party.

The Fairland Police Station’s policing area may be small but theft of and out of vehicles is becoming a big problem for police.

The station commander, Lieutenant Colonel Clive de Freitas, told Northcliff Melville Times that the station has been experiencing many vehicle thefts as well as theft out of vehicles.

He said they’ve noticed that this particular type of crime usually happens around schools in the area or any place where many cars are parked at once.

Streets around Northcliff High School have been identified as theft hotspots.

De Freitas said Jubilee Drive and Castlehill Drive around Northcliff High School are problem areas for police, as well as Weltervreden Road and Taibos Road around Northcliff Primary School.

He added that Beyers Naude is also a problem, especially around bars just off the road. He explained that patrons are forced to park along Beyers Naude Drive once the parking area of the bars are full, which creates an opportunity for out-of-sight vehicles to be targeted.

He said the hotspots are not limited to the aforementioned areas but also where there are large gatherings and not enough parking spaces.

De Freitas subsequently urged residents to call the Fairland Police Station as well as the various security companies operating in the area if they are expecting large numbers of patrons.

He explained that the station has been working closely with the various security companies in trying to keep that particular crime down. “You know, it really works. It really keeps the crime down at these hotspots,” De Freitas said.

He added that residents can always call the police when they are having a get-together or even when they go on holiday, so they can keep an eye on residents’ cars and homes.
