Brixton police continue their war on drugs

Constable Mngomezulu asks a young man about a device he had dropped and which looks like a pipe

The Brixton Police Station hasn’t given drug dealers and abusers in their policing area any breathing room and they don’t plan on doing so anytime soon.

During each of the station’s crime prevention operations, they target areas where suspected drug dealers and users are.

On 28 February, the station’s officers, as well as security personnel from Alert Security and Armed Response Services (Asars), Delta Tactical and Bright Angel Security, performed random stop and searches.

The device police believe is a pipe used for smoking drugs.

During one of the searches in Hursthill on the corner of Portland Avenue and Huntley Streets, police came across two men, one of whom they believe was a user.

When they approached one of the men he immediately complied with officers and was searched, while the other man first dropped something on the ground before agreeing to be searched.

No drugs were found on the second man, however, police investigated what he dropped and found a device which looked as though it was used as a pipe. When police asked him whether he used drugs, he denied it and avoided answering officers on what he used the device for.

Brixton Police Station commander, Colonel Mkhacani Maluleke explained that his officers will not hesitate to arrest suspects with even a small amount of drugs on them in order to get to their dealers.

Neither of the men was arrested at the time, however, they received a stern lecture from Maluleke about drugs in the area and what it does to the community.
